About Me

My name is Johnny Vasquez.
I create content that uses stories to sell.
I also knit stuff.

My story

Originally from the Los Angeles suburb of West Covina, CA, I am the oldest of 7 kids. I grew up in love with movies and spent much of my youth performing in theater and choir. I briefly attended university with the goal of becoming a teacher, but dropped out when I understood I had no patience for bureaucracy.

At the age of 26 I had two life changing moments.

First, I read The 4 Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris. This inspired me to one day start a business that would allow me to travel the world.

Second, I ended up living in my car on the streets of Long Beach, CA after a failed 2 year engagement. I could have gone home to my parents, but instead I chose to figure out how to survive on my own.

Over the next 2.5 years I would lose 50lbs, complete a sprint triathlon, get married, travel around the US, and start a business.

In 2017 my wife and I packed up our two daughters and became full-time digital nomads. We traveled around Europe for 9 months, eventually ending up in Tallinn, Estonia in 2018. Since then we’ve had 3 more children; a boy and twin girls. Aside from the cold, we love Estonia and the life we can provide our family here.

These days, when I’m not working, you’ll find me playing board games with my buddies, watching the latest film release at the cinema, or sipping a fancy cocktail at a secret bar.

My Kids: Aurora (8), Aria (6), Johnny (4), Anastasia (1), and Alexandra (1)

Professional career

For the better part of 12 years I’ve been an entrepreneur in the fiber arts industry. I launched my business somewhat on accident, creating YouTube videos to teach people how to knit. The quality of what was available at the time left a lot to be desired. I thought I could do a better job with my iPhone. So I did.

Since launching my first website back in 2011, I have used content as my primary marketing strategy.

Here are just a few of the campaigns I’ve created over the years:

I’ve also tried everything from making a subscription box for knitting kits, to hosting live events, to opening a retail store.

Not everything has been a success, but I’ve kept swinging to find the things that connect.

Recently I launched a daily email newsletter called The Yarnist that currently has more than 5,000 subscribers (in 2 months) and a 61% open rate.

And I have a new knitting podcast launching later this year.

While I still plan to serve my knitting community, I have spent the past two years simplifying my business so I can focus on other projects going forward.

Personality & Strengths

As the oldest of seven kids I often feel I was born to lead.

My thirst for knowledge has enabled me to teach myself much of what I’ve learned about business, marketing, and leadership. It also makes me a great researcher, gathering a plethora of resources so I can make well informed decisions.

I am confident in my choices, sometimes to a fault, but I am willing to fail fast and learn from my mistakes. As Mike Tyson says “Everyone has a plan until you get punched in the face.”

My ability to see the big picture allows me to define big goals, but I have also learned to be laser focused on the ONE THING that will move us forward.

Oddly I don’t consider myself that creative.

However, I am GREAT at stealing good ideas from other people and making them my own. I spend a ridiculous amount of time figuring out what is working well, and then do my best to imitate that.

I LOVE a good story.

I am always looking for ways to take my customers on an emotional journey that leads them to a solution for their problem.

That, to me, is great marketing.
